The UKOLN ISC is charged with advising the JISC and the wider Further and Higher Education communities about trends in the development and adoption of relevant technologies. Our primary framework for this kind of activity is the JISC Observatory.

Resource Discovery

The UKOLN ISC is engaged in research, development and advocacy in the area of digital resource-discovery. We support the JISC-funded Discovery Programme, work with standards organisations such as the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, and develop prototype resource-discovery tools and services.

Developer Engagement

The DevCSI project works to engage with developers working in the Higher Education sector. Developers play a vital, and sometimes under-appreciated role in ensuring that our institutions can innovate and continue to deliver a world-class teaching, learning and research experience.

RIM

The UKOLN ISC supports the JISC's Research Information Management (RIM) Programme closely, through a number of activities, including reviewing and synthesising programme outputs and providing direct support to the UK HEI staff working in this area.

Technical Innovation

Technical staff at the UKOLN ISC have acquired a broad range of technical skills and expertise and work on a range of development projects, including prototyping web services, evaluating the usability of services and devices and data and text-mining.

Knowledge Exchange Digital Author Identifier Summit

An important milestone meeting on digital identifiers was held earlier this week in the Tower Hill area of London by the Knowledge Exchange, an international information science strategy group representing the UK, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. There were also representatives present from a number of other countries including Australia, Italy, Norway, the United States, from the international publisher Elsevier and from the ORCID initiative. The meeting at the former Royal Mint, convened by the JISC on 13-14 March 2010, focussed on Digital Author Identifiers and was primarily concerned with uniquely identifying researchers and other academic staff in a cost-effective, internationally agreed and scalable way that has not hitherto been achieved.
